The Trouble Shooters

The troubleshooters is a small company which is specialised in consultancy, and helping people discover alternative technologies.

Why alternative technologies, well there are many reasons for looking at alternative technologies, some are simple and easy to understand, and others far more obscure.

The easy ones are.

  • No need for license management, as there is not any licenses involved, which restrict copying or installation.
  • No need for license fees, which can be a significant saving in many systems.
  • No expensive upstart for new employees, if alternative technologies are used.

The more obscure ones are

  • No vendor lock-in, you are not forced to deal with one supplier, or service provider.
  • No concerns about the subcontractor economic situation, because if the company closes another can take over.
  • There are no closed or proprietory technologies, thus either are standards compliant, or the technology is visible.

Fallacies.

  • It is often contended that the open source is Free as in free beer, this is not true, the maintenance costs are about the same as for propriatory software, however, you do have a real saving in the licensing costs, and the license maintenance, which is where the "real" savings are.
  • It is often contented that you cannot obtain support, because there are no responsible company behind the system.. Next time you buy some software, do take the time to read the EULA, it nearly always says something like "the company is not responsible for bugs, data loss or the like from the use of this software", in which case you are in a similiar situation as with alternative software.
  • It is often said that alternative technologies are immature, and not stable, this is also false, because most websites on the net, use alternative solutions, and these solutions have now matured to the degree, that only highly specialised usage of computing, or really badly designed software can cause you to be forced into a propriatory platform.
